KFC bows new menu item with contest on the side
Vowing to address the chilly Canadian winter with a new comfort food, KFC intro'd chicken bowls at participating restaurants across Canada yesterday. To give the promo extra oomph, there's posting on Facebook.
The new homestyle dish combines mashed potatoes, chicken, corn, gravy and cheese - but in what order are they layered? That question is the foundation of the contest element of a new promotional campaign created by Young & Rubicam Toronto. KFC enthusiasts are being invited to visit a microsite until the end of the year and virtually assemble a chicken bowl, attempting to layer the ingredients in correct order for 10 daily chances to win real versions of the new dish, as well as the grand prize of a home entertainment system.
The contest, plus TV spots on various national and specialty networks - with media buys by Toronto's Zenith Optimedia - will conclude on Dec. 31, when the meal-in-a-bowl will disappear from KFC outlets.

CanWest expands community publishing portfolio
CanWest MediaWorks Publications announced yesterday it has acquired three publication groups in Windsor-Essex County in southwestern Ontario: Phoenix Media Group, Cornerstone Publications and Sims Publications. The acquisitions bring CanWest's reach in the region to more than 30,000 homes, and its total community publications throughout Canada to 30.
The six new titles in CanWest's stable include three paid circulation weeklies (The Kingsville Reporter, The Tilbury Times and LakeShore News), two total market coverage weeklies (Shoreline Week and LaSalle Post) and the monthly Windsor Parent magazine. As well, CanWest has acquired the commercial printing assets of Sims Publications.
Bob Calvert has been appointed interim GM of the new Windsor Community Publishing Group. Reporting to CanWest Community Publishing division Rob Leuschner, Calvert will oversee operations while a search is underway for a permanent candidate for the position.
Rogers buys OLN
Rogers Media announced last Friday it is buying the Outdoor Life Network from its partners CTVglobemedia and Versus, taking the one-third share owned by each in the cable channel. The deal is expected to close in the first quarter of 2008, according to a statement issued by the Toronto media conglom, and is subject to CRTC approval.
Financial details of the separate agreements with CTVgm and Versus, a US-based cable and satellite sportscaster, were not revealed.
The deal arrives just as the deadline on another has passed, with Score Media pulling The Score off the block after a fruitless six-month search for a buyer. Controlling shareholder Score Media and its CEO John Levy had reportedly put a $283.5-million price tag on the sports channel, but time on a possible deal ran out on Saturday despite interest from a number of bidders.
