The new Advertising Media Management program announced yesterday by Toronto's Centennial College is designed to address frequently expressed concerns about where the next generation of media planning and buying specialists is going to come from.

Applications are currently being accepted for the one-year post-graduate certificate program, which is aimed at college and university grads who have experience and/or interest in advertising, and includes a 15-week field placement with an agency or research company.

"The advertising industry is demanding that graduates be trained in research and analysis," explains program coordinator Colette Brochu. "There's so much money spent on advertising, clients want to be assured their placements are effective."

This new program will be added to the two advertising programs already offered by the college - a one-year specialty in Advertising Account Management and a three-year postsecondary program in Advertising.

APTN gets green light for high-def

The CRTC has approved APTN's bid to get into high-definition programming, and the Aboriginal-aimed channel says it will launch a new HD channel in the first week of March, running 17 hours of original programming a week.

The channel applied for the HD spin-off in the fall, and got the go-ahead from Gatineau in a ruling last week - though the move faced questions from producers at Inuit Broadcasting and cultural group Inuit Tapirit Kanatami about the availability of Inuit language programming.

APTN noted that there is little HD programming available in Inuktitut, but argued that the new channel could help change that situation. APTN HD will be "an impetus for Aboriginal producers to begin creating programming in this new format," said CEO Jean LaRose in a statement.

The channel will not be a "must carry" for cable and satellite companies.
