Audiences up leading to Super Bowl

CTV's coverage of the Conference Championships on Sunday marked the net's two most-watched NFL games ever.

The NFC Conference Championship featuring NY Giants @ Green Bay (6:35 p.m. ET) peaked at 2.35 million viewers from 9:35-10:05 pm ET. With a final average audience of 1.83 million viewers, the game was up 25% compared to the same playoff game last year, which aired on Global and achieved 1.46 million. The game delivered 1.02 million viewers A25-54 and 939,000 viewers A18-49, up 13% compared to last year in both demos.

The AFC Conference Championship featuring San Diego @ New England (3 pm ET) drew 1.38 million viewers, up 4% compared to the same playoff game last year, which achieved 1.32 million with Global. Audience levels peaked at 1.72 million viewers in the final three minutes of the game.

CTV's season-long NFL coverage culminates on February 3 with Super Bowl XLII, beginning at 12 noon ET with an extensive pre-game show.

BRC hosting panel to review impact of writers' strike

The Broadcast Research Council plans to host a mid-season review of how Canadian interests are being affected by the US writers' strike and what's likely to happen as a result.

The event will take place in Toronto on the afternoon of Jan. 31. Speakers will include BRC director Kevin Brault, group manager of broadcast investments and communication strategies at M2 Universal. As well, the heads of programming from CTV, Global and the CBC have been invited to share insights about what the future may hold for the major networks.
