Doctors staging lie-in in Ottawa today
For two hours during this morning's commute, hospital gurneys complete with purported patients were placed in seven key spots in Ottawa's downtown not far from Parliament Hill.
Sponsored by the Canadian Medical Association and activated by Ottawa-based Knock on Wood Communications + Events, the guerrilla effort was aimed at dramatizing the dearth of family doctors in Canada, where the CMA says almost five million citizens lack access to medical care.
From their "sick beds," actors posing as patients handed out flyers stating that this country would need an immediate influx of 26,000 physicians just to match average doctor-to-population levels of the UK, the US and Australia, and that the average age of Canadian MDs is 50, suggesting that upcoming retirements will worsen the situation.

APTN forced to delay expansion
Unspecified technical problems have delayed the addition of programming aimed at APTN's West Coast audiences. The aboriginal-aimed channel has shelved "until further notice" plans for programming that was due to debut yesterday.
The cable channel was expected to start airing six hours of programming "targeting unique audiences across Canada" through its east and west broadcast feeds. The feeds were previously differentiated only by a three-hour delay and, according to a last-minute statement, will stay that way while APTN sorts out the trouble.
APTN's spring schedule includes Warriors: TKO, which follows four fighters from rival boxing clubs as they train together; the fifth and final season of renegadepress.com; and a new season of Rez Rides, charting the adventures of Mohawk entrepreneur and "king of car customizing" Brian White.
