St. Patrick's Day OK - but watch out for "green"

If guidelines currently being prepared in Canada's capital had been in place a few months ago, Lululemon Athletica probably wouldn't have waded into hot water by attributing environmental benefits to its VitaSea clothing line.

In the near future, businesses advertising green products in Canada will have to prove such claims under stricter guidelines imposed by the Ottawa-based Competition Bureau and Canadian Standards Association. The two organizations are set to release national rules demanding that the use of terms such as "environmentally friendly," "recycled" and "chemical-free" are backed up with factual corroboration.

In a similar move down south, the US Federal Trade Commission is currently holding workshops to get consumer input to underpin an update of its "green" guidelines for advertisers.

Corus Radio to launch iNews800 with UGC

Corus Radio is launching an Internet-driven, 24-hour all-news radio venture, iNews880, in Edmonton at 6 am MT on Tuesday, May 20. iNews880.com and 880 AM will pump out 30-minute information packages featuring news, weather, traffic, business news, sports and local news.

User-generated content and citizen journalism reports - gleaned through blogs, i-reports and community coverage - will amount to what Corus is calling "experiential content." The UGC, reports Corus, will ensure that iNews880 is grounded in the Edmonton community, while staff journos and news partners will also be part of the mix.

Doug Rutherford, Corus Radio Edmonton's GM and VP news-talk programming, says the moves are in line with the company's commitment to provide "credible and immediate news coverage to the people of northern Alberta and the world, on radio, online and on-demand. iNews880 will bring audiences news when they want it and how they want it, with their direct involvement." iNews880 and 630 CHED program director Syd Smith adds the launch marks "an evolution in radio."

Accountants staging online contest

Nowadays, web fun is coming from even seemingly unlikely places. Case in point: The Toronto-HQ'd Certified General Accountants of Ontario is hosting the high-stakes "One-Hour Accounting Contest" online this Wednesday, March 19.

Open to registered students at Ontario colleges and universities, it will be a fast and furious 60 minutes during which contestants will vie for tuition credits, $5,000 for their schools and viral fame by answering tough questions created by a professional accountant. This is CGAO's second annual online contest. The first one attracted more than 1,800 contestants, and scored substantial attention from news media across Canada.
