Stratford pursuing audiences of tomorrow

Where are the future's theatre goers today? The Stratford Shakespeare Festival knows many of them are hanging out on social media sites. That's why the Ontario-based theatre organization commissioned Vortex Social, the social marketing division of Toronto's Vortex Mobile, to get busy online.

The results of their efforts include a Facebook application called "Hooked on Shakespeare," which launched late last week and has already attracted several hundred users.

Among other available activities, users can complete a personality profiler to match themselves to Shakespearean characters, test their knowledge in the "2B or Not 2B" trivia game and connect famous actors back to Stratford with a six-degrees-of-separation engine. A fan page includes webcasts and a designated YouTube channel.

For the next two months, Ontarians can enter a microsite to custom design and name virtual pizzas. The 10 deemed to be best will be featured in an upcoming Pizza Nova flyer, after which customers will choose the top winner. All entrants will be entered into a random prize draw for a trip for two to Cuba.

Guess who's leveraging Facebook now

To mark the 55th anniversary of the discovery of the double helix, Genome Alberta has begun offering "virtual genes" as gifts on Facebook.

The Calgary-based not-for-profit research organization hopes its unusual - make that unique - initiative will allow Facebook users to literally show their friends what they're made of, and become more scientifically educated about what makes them tick, says corp communications director Mike Spear. "A strong part of what we do is outreach," he tells MiC, "and we wanted to reach a lot of people for a reasonable price."

Each Facebook gift comes with a description of the particular gene and its function, and links to more information. Given that all humans are 99% genetically identical, the virtual gene gifts allow users to look at the bits that make an individual unique.
